As we age, the female body undergoes hormonal and structural changes that have an impact on a person’s aesthetics, which is sometimes difficult to manage.
Amongst the key factors that influence how we relate with our body there is body weight and how this affects our silhouette. In these terms, cellulite and the blemishes it causes play a significant role.

However, cellulite blemishes can be reduced with cellulite treatments and by changing certain everyday habits.

What is cellulite and how does it show?

All women refer to it as "cellulite", but actually the scientific name is edematous fibrosclerotic panniculopathy (EFP).

The term defines an inflammatory state of the subcutaneous adipose tissue caused by multiple factors: genetic and constitutional, hormonal, circulatory and behavioural.

The typical “orange-peel appearance” of skin is due to the increase in number and volume of the adipose (fat) tissues and the thickening of the connective tissue, the latter being the “mesh structure” that holds these cells. These changes, which result from microcirculation problems in the adipose tissue, in turn establish a vicious cycle that leads to further hampering the normal microcirculation and increased water retention, which will exacerbate the inflammatory state and thus worsen the blemish.

As cellulite progresses, the subcutaneous tissue will change cellulite will show in its typical dimpled, lumpy appearance.

The aesthetic changes may be accompanied by some pain in the area, capillary fragility, and tingling.

Generally, cellulite affects the buttocks, thighs and hips and mainly affects women because they have a higher percentage of body fat than men, but also because this process is related to the activity of hormones.

The causes of cellulite

Cellulite is due to a number of factors, often interrelated:

  • genetic factors that determine an individual tendency to accumulate fat cells
  • hormonal factors that influence the functionality of venous and lymphatic vessels and cause liquid retention
  • microcirculation problems, in turn related to genetic and hormonal factors, or triggered by certain medication, such as birth control pills.

A number of behavioral factors can make cellulite worse: an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to cellulite, for instance if we have a sedentary life, if we smoke, but also FAD dieting or crash dieting, as well as a diet rich in salt.

But what are the changes to our everyday habits that can help to reduce cellulite?

If you really want to reduce cellulite, the bottom-line rule is to act on several fronts, that is not just by targeting skin blemishes but also by taking into account your overall well-being.

The key factors to work on are four:

  1. Food we eat
  2. Physical exercise
  3. Good habits
  4. Targeted treatments.

1. Cellulite and Nutrition

A balanced and varied diet is always the first step to achieve the overall well-being of our body.

If you do have cellulite, a few specific recommendations should also be followed:

  • beware of salt: liquid retention is best countered by reducing the salt we use on the food we eat
  • drink lots of water: at least a litre and a half a day, preferably low-sodium or low-mineral-content water and drink ita way from meals especially
  • carefully select your food: pick fruit and vegetables rich in potassium, because it counters the effects of sodium; reduce consumption of alcohol, chocolate and coffee. And if your bowel is not so regular, eat more fibers and cut down on refined carbohydrates
  • bear in mind your anti-cellulite allies: berry fruit, especially blueberries, contain substances that are good for blood flow, including vitamin C. Instead, pineapple and celery are excellent diuretics.

2. Cellulite and exercise

Physical exercise, especially in the lower limbs, is essential to counteract cellulite because, besides burning fat, working out improves the cardiovascular system and strengthens muscles.

For maximum effectiveness, physical exercise should be:

  • regular: 30-40 minutes of exercise every day or at least three times a week helps to reduce fat reserves
  • balanced: avoid power workout (Strong physical exercise in very short periods of time) because it can trigger the production of too much lactic acid, which hampers microcirculation. Prefers low heart-rate exercises (for example, walk rather than run)
  • targeted: focus your workout on the legs and perform exercises that stimulate blood flow and support venous return.

3. Cellulite and good habits

In addition to a healthy diet and exercising, you can counter the causes of cellulite by adopting good daily habits:

  • don’t smoke, because smoking impairs circulationespecially peripheral blood flow
  • avoids high-heel shoes and very tight clothing, as well as improper posture, such as sitting down with your legs crossed, since this can affect circulation and tissue oxygenation
  • avoid stress, or at least try to reduce it by sleeping regularly and taking some free time for yourself and to relax
  • move your legs to stretch them, for example by rotating your ankles at least every half hour, especially if you do a sedentary job or if you stay standing for long hours.

4. Cellulite and targeted treatments

Good everyday habits can be helpful especially if combined with specific treatments to prevent cellulite and reduce it. The most effective treatments are those that work inside skin, by supporting liquid drainage and microcirculation, and outside, that is creams and / or muds having a draining and skin-smoothing effect.
